Audition Tips

Insider Secrets for Success

⸻
Nerves Are Normal (and Actually a Good Sign!)

Feeling butterflies? That means you care! Every actor—from first-timers to Broadway veterans—gets nervous at auditions. Take a deep breath and remember this: the director and creative team are excited to see you. They have a show to cast, and they NEED talented actors like you. They're on your side, rooting for you to do your best. You've got this!

⸻
Treat Every Audition Professionally

Even if you know the director or creative team from previous shows, approach the audition as if you're meeting them for the first time. No special treatment, no assumptions—just bring your A-game and show them what you can do right now, in this moment.

⸻
When Things Go Wrong, Keep Going!

Accompanist hit a wrong note? Forgot a lyric? Voice cracked? It happens to the pros all the time! Here's the secret: DON'T let us see you've noticed. Keep performing with confidence and recover gracefully. Mishaps happen in live theatre constantly, so when you power through during auditions, you're proving you can handle anything onstage when it counts. That's a skill directors value enormously!

⸻
Give Grace at Callbacks

Callbacks are intense! Directors are trying to see dozens of actors, teach choreography, hear harmonies, and make huge decisions—all in just a few hours. If you need to arrive late or leave early, we'll do our best to accommodate you, but please understand it's challenging to juggle everything. Patience and flexibility go a long way!

⸻
“How Can I Improve Without Feedback?”
We hear this question a lot, and we totally get it! Here's the honest truth:

We see 70-100 actors at auditions, and casting decisions often happen quickly in the room. We simply can't provide individual feedback to every performer—but that doesn't mean you can't grow!

⸻
Common Reasons Actors Aren't Called Back (and How to Fix Them):

1. Vision & Fit - Sometimes you're incredibly talented, but you don't match the director's specific vision for this particular show. It's not personal—it's about puzzle pieces fitting together. The right role for you is out there!

2. Volume & Clarity - If we struggle to hear or understand you in the audition room, we worry we won't hear you onstage in front of 450 people. This doesn't mean you're not talented—it means you're still developing your projection and diction skills. The good news? These are totally learnable! Keep taking classes, practicing, and building your voice. You're not ready YET, but with work, you absolutely will be.

3. Acting the Material - A beautiful voice is wonderful, but if you're singing without expression or reciting a monologue without emotion, it's hard to stand out. We need to see you become the character—show us feelings, opinions, reactions! Technical skill + emotional connection = magic.

4. Attitude & Teamwork - Theatre is a team sport. If we see unkind behavior, lack of respect, or poor attitude toward others, it significantly impacts casting decisions. We're looking for artists who lift each other up, collaborate joyfully, and contribute to a positive rehearsal environment. Be the cast member everyone wants to work with!

5. Availability Matters - Our rehearsal process is short and every minute counts. A conflict here and there is totally fine, but week-long absences or frequent conflicts make it extremely difficult to put a show together. Before you audition, honestly assess your availability—it's a major factor in casting decisions.

⸻
The Bottom Line

Every audition is a learning experience. Every class makes you stronger. Every performance builds your skills. If you don't get cast this time, don't give up—keep training, keep growing, and keep showing up.
