Audition Preparation

Come Ready to Shine

⸻
For Play Auditions:

Your Monologue (1 minute): This is your moment to captivate us! Choose a monologue that showcases what makes you special—strong acting choices, clear diction, appropriate volume, and material that fits your age and experience level. While memorization is highly encouraged (it frees you to make bolder choices and connect with the audition panel), we understand nerves happen!

Don't Have a Monologue? No Problem! Pre-approved monologues are available at least one month before auditions at the SLT offices (check the kiosk at the end of the hallway downstairs). You're welcome to use one of ours or bring your own—whatever helps you feel most confident and prepared.

Bring Your Schedule: This is crucial! Come with your complete schedule so you can accurately fill in any potential conflicts on your audition form. Once casting is finalized, no additional conflicts can be added—so take time now to check with family, review other commitments, and be thorough. Directors build rehearsal schedules around the conflicts you list, so accuracy helps everyone succeed.

Pro Tip: The more prepared you are, the more you can relax and let your talent speak for itself!

⸻
For Musical Auditions:

Your Song (16-32 bars): This is your chance to show us what your voice can do! Choose a song that highlights your vocal range, allows you to make strong acting choices, and fits your age and style. Musical theatre songs are recommended, but any genre that lets your talent shine works beautifully. Memorization is highly encouraged—it helps you connect with the material and the audition panel.

Important: Please avoid singing from the show you're auditioning for. We want to hear your unique sound and style in a song you've mastered. You'll have the opportunity to sing from the actual show at callbacks!

Sheet Music is Essential: Bring your sheet music in the correct key—our accompanist will be there to support you! Singing to a track or acapella is highly discouraged, as live accompaniment allows you to perform at your best. Need to purchase sheet music? Check out www.musicnotes.com for affordable, downloadable options.

Don't Have a Song? We've Got You! Pre-approved songs are available at least one month before auditions at the SLT offices (check the kiosk at the end of the hallway downstairs). Use one of ours or bring your own—whatever makes you feel most prepared and confident.

Dance Auditions: Relax—you won't dance at initial auditions! Dance calls happen only at callbacks, so focus on nailing your vocal audition first.

Bring Your Complete Schedule: This is non-negotiable! Come prepared to list every potential conflict on your audition form. Once the show is cast, no additional conflicts can be added—directors build the entire rehearsal schedule around what you provide, so accuracy now saves stress later.

YOU’VE GOT THIS!

Walk in prepared, be yourself, and let your talent do the talking.
