Understudies

The Unsung Heroes of Theatre

Theatre is a team sport, and understudies are MVPs. With performance schedules sometimes including up to four shows in a single day, understudies are essential to protecting performers' vocal health and ensuring every audience gets an exceptional experience.

For select productions, we cast understudies for the most vocally demanding roles. Being an understudy isn't a consolation prize—it's a master class in theatre. You'll attend all rehearsals, work closely with directors, dive deep into character development, and stand ready to step into the spotlight.

What to Expect as an Understudy:

  • Guaranteed performance opportunity in at least one school show (scheduled in advance so you can invite your biggest fans!)

  • Clear expectations from day one—you'll know exactly what's required during rehearsals

  • Real responsibility—the show depends on you being ready, present, and prepared

Your Choice Matters: If you'd prefer not to be considered for an understudy role, simply indicate that on your audition form. We respect your decision!

Important Reminder: Whether you're cast in a principal role or as an understudy, full availability during tech week and performances is required. Conflicts during these critical times will affect casting decisions for all roles.
